In many drivers’ minds, Acura assist has always been top notch. From their reputable standing of well-made construction, safety-conscious features and subject advancements, Acura is a earnest competitor in the car industry The Acura MDX turned the luxury SUV segment on its head, upstaging the performance and technology of European luxury models, but with better value and renowned Acura quality. It was a tough act to follow, but Acura did just that with an even better MDX for 2010.

The seven-passenger Acura MDX offers more power and performance for 2010 with lower fuel consumption. It has more luxury and user-friendly technology, yet its sporty character is stronger than ever. On closer inspection, there has been a pretty thorough transformation.

The 2010 MDX shows the world a bold new face with the Acura signature design grille and myriad other new details. However, the changes are much more than skin-deep. The MDX was already a power leader with a 300-hp 3.7-liter VTEC® V6 – more standard power than the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML350 and Porsche Cayenne! For 2010, the engine has been made even smoother and more responsive. A new six-speed automatic transmission helps boost performance while improving fuel economy. Feeling sporty? Shift manually with steering wheel paddleshifters.

Thanks to a slew of chassis enhancements, the MDX handles and rides even better for 2010. New 19-inch wheels are available. As before, the real “whopper” in the standard equipment column is Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which is among the world’s most advanced and effective all-wheel drive systems.

Acura SH-AWD varies power between the front and rear wheels in fractions of a second, and apportions power based on the incline of hills. Its handling “magic” comes courtesy of “torque vectoring,” which means it can vary power between the left and right rear wheels to enhance grip through a curve. Similar technology is also found in some of the world’s top sportscars.

Want to take it up a notch? The Advance Package adds suspension technology that’s also featured in a $320,000 Ferrari. Called Active Damper System, it uses suspension dampers (AKA “shock absorbers”) with a special magneto-rheological fluid. It takes longer to say the name and explain the technology than it does to feel the amazing effect on a test drive. Suffice it to say, bumps don’t have a chance. The MDX may drive like a sport sedan, but it works like an SUV with up to 83.5 cubic feet of cargo space and a 5,000-pound towing capacity.

For its MSRP of $42,230, the 2010 MDX trumps competitors on value. A leather-trimmed interior, heated front seats and metallic paint are all standard on the MDX – but they cost extra on some European competitors. The Mercedes-Benz ML350, for example, is strictly a five-seater and charges extra for all-wheel drive.

The MDX also includes – as standard – a power moonroof, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, a tri-zone climate control system with humidity control and Bluetooth HandsFreeLink® wireless telephone interface. The standard Acura Premium Sound System gives you an in-dash six-disc CD changer, XM radio and an auxiliary input jack.

The Technology Package brings in a voice-controlled navigation system (with new eight-inch screen) and up-to-the-minute traffic and weather information including weather radar images. The new rearview camera system offers three different rearview angles – normal, wide and a top view, which is a big help when towing.

The Technology Package pampers you and your passengers with the Acura/ELS Surround® 10-speaker Premium Audio System, which belts out 410-watts of digital sound-processed sonic bliss. The built-in hard disk drive (HDD) stores about 3,600 songs.

The Advance Package takes the MDX to the top of its class, but still with exceptional value. It combines the Technology Package with an all-new blind spot information system and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), along with Acura’s unique Collision Mitigation Braking System™. The Advance Package ups the luxury ante with specially contoured ventilated front seats covered by perforated Milano leather. The final option is the new Rear Entertainment System with a DVD player, power folding nine-inch high-resolution LCD screen, dual wireless headphones, a wireless remote control and a 115-volt plug in the center console.

The real shocker comes when you see the MSRP for a 2010 MDX equipped with every factory package: $53,755. If you were expecting $10,000-$15,000 higher, you’ve been reading too many Euro-brand brochures.
